CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Having retrieved his boot, Dannen spent much of the early morning trying and failing to pick a splinter out of his foot that he’d picked up when forced to walk with only one boot on into the street. Finally giving it up as a bad job, he spent the rest of the time fretting over his and his companions’ situation, trying to come up with some plan that didn’t end with them all dead at the hands of gods. He was still trying to think of ideas—and still not possessed of a single one—when the sun crested the horizon, casting pale light through the window of his room.

He rose from the rickety chair—he had given up his boycotting of it hours ago, deciding that, considering what he faced, dying to a chair might be the best option available—and walked toward the bed. He sat, tugging on his boots and slinging his scabbarded sword back over his shoulder. That done, he stepped outside of the room and into the hallway of the inn’s upper floor and made his way to Fedder’s room.

He knocked but heard no answer. “Fedder,” he called, “come on—it’s time we left.”

Still no answer, and Dannen found himself annoyed. The mage and Perandius had interrupted his sleep well enough, and now the mage was in there resting. He remembered how easily the mage had broken the latch on his own door and grinning, he grabbed the handle and shouldered his way into the door much as he suspected Fedder had.

Only, he was not Fedder, and instead of shoving the door in, he only succeeded in acquiring a fresh ache in his shoulder, one that he was confident would bruise. “Fedder, come on, damnit!” he shouted. “We have to go.”

Still no answer, and Dannen knocked on the door again. Well, not really a knock, so much as it was a bang and, finally, he heard a muffled voice from inside the room.

“Wha…who is it?”

“Who do you think it is?” Dannen growled. “Now come on—it’s time we left.”

“Alright, Butcher, just a sec.”

A moment later, the door swung open to reveal the giant mage, shirtless and knuckling his eyes as he yawned. “Mornin’, Butcher. Come on in—just give me a minute, and I’ll be ready.”

The mage turned and headed back inside. Dannen followed him and saw that the mage’s room was identical to his own. He made his way to the table then hesitated, seeing that it was covered in clothes and not all of them the mage’s. Unless, of course, Fedder had taken to wearing women’s undergarments which, while an amusing thought, Dannen doubted. He glanced at the bed and saw a lump under the covers, a little bit of blonde hair poking out.

He sighed. “May want to tell your guest to leave.”

“Ah, right,” Fedder said. The mage grabbed one end of the cover and lifted it. “Come on, lass, out you get.”

A pair of tanned legs appeared first, followed by a woman who was clutching a sheet around her to hide her nakedness.
